Devon Smith has been traded to Essendon, while Greater Western Sydney will receive the Bombers’ highly valued pick 11 in return.
The Giants will get the Dons’ first round pick and a 2018 third rounder, while Essendon acquires Smith, pick 24 and a 2018 second round selection.
“We’re delighted to be able to move into the first round of the upcoming NAB AFL Draft," GWS list manager Craig Cameron told the club's website.
“This improves our position to be able to add some of the best young talent to our list next month.
“Devon has been a part of our club for a number of years and we wish him all the best in the next stage of his career at Essendon.”
On SEN’s Hungry For Sport yesterday, former St Kilda chief Brian Waldron outlined the details of how the Dons will secure the services of Smith, Jake Stringer and Adam Saad.
“The most likely scenario if I was sitting there and doing it, would be get 11 and go, you can have it GWS but give us two second round picks back, which they will do," he said.
"And then use those two second round picks and muck around with those to make sure you get Saad, and leave the Bulldogs with no choice.
“Essendon will get their three players and as it turns out, aside from losing draft picks, probably wont lose any players out the door, which will be a mighty effort.”
The Geelong Falcons product has averaged 20 possessions and one goal a game across his 109-match career. Smith finished second in the Giants’ best and fairest award in 2014.
