Sunday Grand Final 'ridiculous': AFL boss

2017-03-20T09:30+11:00

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan has quashed speculation that the Grand Final could shift to a Sunday.

The league is currently debating whether to move the starting time of the showcase event to a twilight fixture, but last week, SEN’s Sam McClure revealed there is also a push to move from a Saturday to a Sunday.

McLachlan told SEN Breakfast that a decision on the starting time was nearing, but a move away from the traditional Saturday isn’t on the cards.

“I can say definitely that it won’t be Sunday, and it’s ridiculous,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“No you’re not (going to get more TV viewers) and then people have got to go to work the next day.”

McLachlan also revealed that the venue for the AFLW Grand Final will be announced today.

The Brisbane Lions have won the right to host the inaugural decider, but a dispute between the ground staff at the Gabba and the respective governing bodies over the quality of the playing surface, threatens to overshadowed the event.

Metricon Stadium is mooted as the most likely fall back option, but the Adelaide Oval remains a possibility, which would no doubt raise the ire of Brisbane.

“There is a final turf inspection (at the Gabba) this morning,” McLachlan said.

“If the recommendation is that’s it safe to play, we’ll play there, and if not, we’ll work after that.

"Generally though, stadiums are there to be used, and I'm not sure that grounds people understand that they're there to prepare the turf so it can be used.

"I've been very quiet on this, I want to launch, but I've been very diplomatic.

"Hopefully we are playing at the Gabba, it will be a great event for football in Queensland, for AFLW and that's our aim."
