Suns chairman responds to Queensland crowds report

2020-06-09T08:06+10:00

Gold Coast chairman Tony Cochrane has confirmed the club is pushing for a crowd up to 1000 people to attend Saturday night’s match West Coast at Metricon Stadium.

Caroline Wilson reported on Monday night that small crowds will be welcomed back at all matches in Queensland this weekend.

“I can tell you all there will be crowds at the Gabba and at Metricon Stadium this weekend,” Wilson told Channel Nine's Footy Classified.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Premier of Queensland, has announced that they will allow 25 per cent of every football stadium to be filled.

“Where the Gabba’s concerned, that’s around 10,000 or 11,000. The Gabba is not really ready to bring in that many people in this weekend, so on Saturday afternoon for the Fremantle game, they are going to bring in 1000 people.”

Palaszczuk has reportedly "categorically denied" Wilson's claim.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Cochrane says the Suns will find out later today whether the Queensland government will allow a “test crowd” for their Round 2 encounter.

“It’s certainly a real possibility but we’re not over the line yet,” Cochrane said.

“We are waiting for some clear definition from the state government but it would appear that we’ve got a chance of doing a test crowd of up to 1000 people.

“I want to emphasise that that has not actually been decided yet in full.

“We submitted last week an incredibly detailed document that Mark Evans headed up. That was put in and we were given some indications yesterday that maybe that would look favourably for as early as this weekend to stage a small kind of test crowd.

“We are waiting to hear today whether that’s going to become reality.”
