“Half a dozen clubs” speak to Bennell over AFL return

2019-10-16T18:20+11:00

The agent of Harley Bennell has revealed his client has spoken to six AFL clubs over a potential AFL return.

Bennell and Fremantle mutually agreed to terminate his contract after playing just two games in four injury-riddled seasons at the Dockers.

The former No.2 pick is attempting to join a third club as a delisted free agent and his manager, Colin Young, is optimistic about the chances of that occurring.

“It’s looking really promising,” Young told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“I reckon Harley would have spoken to half a dozen clubs in Melbourne and I think in the next two weeks he might fly back to Melbourne and have a few stronger chats.

“But it is looking promising at this stage.”

Bennell’s former teammate Michael Barlow feels he has plenty to offer at AFL level.

“I was thinking about this last night in terms of Harley, I’d love to see Harley get another opportunity,” Barlow told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“He’s on his last chance. He’s probably had a few last chances.

“His talent and his ability - I played in the game when he kicked six and had 20 possessions as a 20-year-old.”

Sydney has emerged as a reported suitor for Bennell who has played 83 games since debuting in 2011.

The 27-year-old has battled chronic calf problems throughout his career.
