Melbourne announce new captain for 2020

2020-02-24T12:47+11:00

Max Gawn has been named Melbourne's new skipper, replacing co-captains Jack Viney and Nathan Jones.

Gawn, who has played 120 games for the Demons, will lead the club for the first in 2020.

Viney and Jones previously shared the captiancy since 2017 before Jones relinquished the role in September. Viney was named vice-captain for the upcoming season.

“Max has developed as a leader, particularly over the past three seasons, with his training and playing standards going to another level in recent years and we are pleased to announce him as captain,” GM of Football Josh Mahoney told melbourne.com.au.

“We are in the very fortunate position to have two standout leaders at the football club in Max Gawn and Jack Viney, who were voted on unanimously by both players and staff."

North Melbourne great David King endorsed the decision, saying his outgoing personality will hold him in good stead.

“I think Max (Gawn) will be a great captain,” King told SEN's Whateley.

“Max has been their shining light and their torchbearer for quite some time. I think it’s right to have the big who has the big presence out there to be your leader.

“Max doesn’t change for anyone and I think that’s very good.”

Melbourne champion Garry Lyon is intrigued to find out the process behind the decision which saw the club move to depose both Jones and Viney for 2020.

“I want to know how they arrived at it, Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“Say there’s 45 players on the list – was it 23 votes to 22. Was it as cut and dried as that.

“Or do the votes get handed in (by the players) and then they go the coaching staff.

“I’m more interested to know whether it’s a pure numbers vote. I’m interested not because I want to be critical but because it intrigues me."
