MCG pitch regeneration needs “urgency” says CA CEO

Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts says there needs to be a sense of urgency in relation to the regeneration of the MCG pitch.

The MCG pitch has once again come under fire after a lifeless day one between Australia and India, which saw the visitors end the day at 2/215.

AUSTRALIAN ASSISTANT COACH “DEPRESSED” BY MCG PITCH

“There is no sense rushing these things, however, we need a sense of urgency at the same time in terms of the regeneration of this wicket square,” Roberts told SEN Test Cricket.

However, Roberts delivered a strong defence of new MCG pitch curator Matt Page, saying there isn’t much more he could have done to produce a strong wicket.

“Would I have liked to see more bounce and carry in this wicket yesterday? Absolutely,” Roberts said.

“Matt Page, the new curator here who has come across from the WACA, has worked tirelessly to do everything he can with the existing drop-in pitches, and I’m not sure Matt could have done a whole lot more.

“A new-ish CEO in Stuart Fox at the MCC, we had some good discussions in recent days about the preparation of the wicket, which was done similarly to the Shield matches and we had a couple results in Shield matches here, good even contests between bat and ball.

“We have had one day of Test cricket, who knows, it’s a funny game, so who knows what is going to happen.

“Let’s give it another four days so we can assess it from a broader perspective.”
