Player agent defends Gold Coast as a destination for draftees

2018-11-22T18:24+11:00

Player agent Winston Rous, who manages top draft prospect Sam Walsh, doesn’t have any reservations about his clients ending up on the Gold Coast.

It was rumoured earlier in the year that some player agents were telling the Suns not to pick their players as they would simply leave in a few years, but Rous said his clients have found homes in Queensland.

“I think I’ve been close enough with some players going up there and having some success and doing quite well,” Rous told SEN’s Time On.

“Jarrod Witts is one who moved there and they’ve been excellent for him and really established his brand as a player and he’s had two of his career best years.

“I think all the people up there, now that they’ll have some continuity of staff, is exciting.”

Walsh is expected to be drafted by Carlton at pick one tonight and Rous doesn’t believe the pressure of the title will get to him.

“(Being pick one) wouldn’t affect Sam Walsh. He’s very good about just controlling what he can control and not focusing on anything he doesn’t need to,” he said.

“I think he’s handled himself with aplomb all year. There is pressure with pick one and you’re forever talked about whether it was the right pick, but I’m confident he’ll do well with it.”

The Suns hold picks two, three and six in tonight's draft.
