AFL’s restart plans dealt major blow by SA government

2020-05-14T06:39+10:00

The AFL’s plans to restart the 2020 season were dealt a major blow after the South Australian government denied Adelaide and Port Adelaide travel exemptions.

Both clubs were hoping the SA government would provide a clearance to fly in and out of South Australia without undertaking the 14-day quarantine period.

It means the Crows and Power will now need to relocate prior to the season resumption.

The AFL was pushing to restart the season on June 11 before receiving a letter from SA chief public health officer Dr Nicola Spurrier and the Commissioner of Police Grant Stevens.

The letter said: “On public health advice, the committee has resolved that any economic and social benefits to be gained by allowing modification or exemptions to SA quarantine requirements for AFL players and staff were not outweighed by the public health risk.”

“We acknowledge that for the AFL to recommence fixtures on its preferred timeframe this may require players and staff to travel to an alternate location for the medium term.

"The Committee also agreed that the restrictions on training for sport in South Australia should apply equally to the AFL. In South Australia, at Step 1 until 8 June, allows non-contact training in groups of up to 10."

The AFL were hoping all clubs could resume training in large groups from next week.

West Coast look set to relocate to a quarantine hub on the Gold Coast for the early part of the season.
