2021-10-14T09:55+11:00

Rugby league Immortal Norm Provan passed away on Wednesday night, aged 89.

The St George great was a second-rower in the club’s 11-year reign as NSWRL premiers between 1956 and 1966.

Provan will live on in rugby league for eternity, being inducted as the game’s 12th Immortal in 2018.

On top of the 256 games he played for his club, Provan appeared 20 times for New South Wales and a further 18 times for Australia.

His appearance in ten grand finals is an Australian premiership rugby league record.

As well as being an official Immortal, Provan’s legacy will live on with the trophy won each year by the NRL premiers depicting himself alongside his great mate, Arthur Summons in the 1963 Grand Final.

The image, named The Gladiators, is perhaps the most famous photograph in rugby league history.

Provan captain/coached St George to four of those premiership wins, and stayed in charge of the Dragons for a final season in 1968 following his retirement.

He also managed Cronulla and Parramatta in different periods throughout the 1970s.

Provan is a member of the NSW Rugby League, Australian Rugby League and Sport Australia Hall of Fames.

Matt White - SEN host

“He's a rugby league legend. He'll be remembered as one half of the Provan-Summons trophy. A true titan of the game. 351 first-class games. Our condolences go out to his family, it is such a big loss for the game.“

Geoff Armstrong - Author Spirit of The Red V

“The fact that he was able to win four competitions as captain/coach is an amazing achievement. No one has done it since. He was a genius.“
