"He just sat there and copped it": Cornes slams "embarassing" Bombers

2019-08-11T10:10+10:00

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has slammed Essendon following its 104-point smashing at the hands of the Western Bulldogs last night.

After Dylan Shiel kicked the first goal of the game for the Bombers, the Bulldogs kicked 21 straight majors to secure a huge percentage-boosting win that keeps their finals chances well and truly alive.

But the story of the night was certainly the Bombers, with Cornes questioning whether they should be playing finals in 2019.

“The review for Essendon will be horrific,” he told AFL.com.au’s The Round So Far after the game.

“Do they deserve to play finals? Not on a performance like that.

“John Worsfold’s sitting there on the bench showing no emotion whatsoever.

“He wasn’t coaching tonight. He was just sitting there and watching a training drill against his side.

“I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t see some fire from him at quarter-time and three-quarter-time and whilst he was on the bench because he just sat there and copped it, as most of the Essendon players did.

“That was just a lack of effort, it was embarrassing.

“On the back of that, there’s no way you could think that they would play finals this year.”

Despite the loss, the Bombers still sit seventh on the ladder but their percentage has dipped from 104.3 to 93.8.

Last night’s team score of 33 was Essendon’s lowest under Worsfold.

Essendon faces Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday night before taking on Collingwood at the MCG on Friday August 23.
