Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin believes the club will bounce back next year after what has been a horrendous 2019.
The club is now locked into 17th spot on the ladder after Friday night’s 53-point defeat at the hands of Sydney.
When asked whether this year more accurately reflects the ‘real’ Melbourne than last year’s Preliminary Final finish, Goodwin said to judge the club on 2020.
“All I can say is we had four years of improvement. This year has been a complete wipe-out. Now, what will determine that question will be our actions next year and we get our chance to do something about it and it won’t really be about what we say, in the end it will be about what we do.
“I can’t answer that question now other than to say that I’m really confident in our players, I’m confident in our club and we’re looking forward to doing something about it.”
Goodwin admits the club has made a number of mistakes that have led to the Dees being in this position right now.
“It’s certainly a big fall from where we were last year to where we are this year and we take responsibility for that and acknowledge that we’ve probably got some things wrong in our preparation over the summer and in-season in terms of where our season is at and also our method of play,” he said.
“I sit here taking responsibility for that and also know that when you fall so far so quickly you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you.”
