Eagles great holds initial talks over Dockers job

2019-09-17T09:47+10:00

West Coast great Peter Sumich has confirmed his interest in securing the senior coaching job at Fremantle.

Sumich, a former development coach at the Dockers, has emerged as a leading candidate for the vacant top job since Ross Lyon’s exit in August.

Since departing Freo in 2016 following a reported falling out with Lyon, Sumich was appointed coach of Western Australia’s under-18 side, leading them to a first national title in 10 years.

When asked whether his hand is up for the Fremantle job on SEN Breakfast, he replied: “Yeah look it is. I’ve had a quick chat to them a couple of weeks ago.”

“That was just an initial chat with Peter Bell and he was giving his thoughts on myself. I think they’ve spoken to a number of others.

“The next stage will be more of a chat in front of four or five others that are going to pick the coach going forward. Whether that’s a slight presentation or Q&A, I’m not too sure.

“I’ve been in the caper long enough to understand it’s a tough one, it’s a very gruelling the process.

"I think Fremantle are going about it the right way and they’ve got to get it right and get the person they want that can help them to build towards winning a premiership.”

Sumich, 51, booted 514 goals in 150 games for the Eagles, winning two premierships in 1992 and 1994.
