Sam Edmund's trade update on Dunkley, Witherden, Caldwell and more

2020-10-21T11:41+11:00

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund joined Gerard Whateley for the latest update on several players ahead of the trade period.

Edmund reports that Essendon’s interest in Josh Dunkley is “real”, while the Bombers’ chances of landing young GWS midfielder Jye Caldwell could be increased after Brad Crouch nominated St Kilda as his club of choice.

Alex Witherden (Brisbane)

“The Lions might find it hard to find rival interest,” he said on SEN’s Whateley.

“That is a pretty healthy deal he’s still on at Brisbane, whether other clubs are willing to absorb that remains to be seen.”

Ollie Wines (Port Adelaide)

“I’d be shocked if Ollie Wines (left),” he said.

“(A possible move to Carlton) was done very subtly last year around family members, contacting people around Carlton who then went to the club directly – it was very much off broadway.

“(Port Adelaide coach) Ken Hinkley could not have been more categoric in recent times.”

Jye Caldwell (GWS Giants)

“Essendon have a real interest in him and I can say that with absolute certainty,” he said.

“What (Brad Crouch nominating St Kilda) does for Jye I’m not so sure – his motivation to leave GWS centres on opportunities and if you’re reading between the lines, the opportunity has dramatically reduced itself at Moorabbin.

“You have to say it does hurt St Kilda’s chances, if he to leave, it looks like it could be to Essendon but it could still be St Kilda (too).

Josh Dunkley (Western Bulldogs)

“The interest from Essendon is there and the story is 100 per cent accurate,” he said.

“They’ve asked the question and he’s contracted at Western Bulldogs – it would take a fair bit to get him out if he was even willing to get out.

“He will have the final say on that, but the interest (from the Bombers) is real.”

Charlie Constable (Geelong)

“There’s no rival interest there at the moment,” he said.
