Key candidate withdraws from Collingwood coaching race

2021-07-05T19:05+10:00

Sam Mitchell is out of the race to become the next coach of Collingwood, according to Sportsday co-host Sam McClure.

The Pies are currently on the lookout for a new head coach following Nathan Buckley’s departure, with 2010 premiership player Luke Ball joining a sub-committee alongside CEO Mark Anderson, football boss Graham Wright, football director Paul Licuria and board member Peter Murphy charged with overseeing the process to appoint the club’s new coach.

Mitchell, who is currently at Hawthorn as an assistant and coaching VFL side Box Hill, was seen as one of the frontrunners to take on the coveted join but has now withdrawn.

“I can tell you tonight that as of today, Collingwood has been informed that Sam Mitchell has withdrawn from the process to be their coach from 2022 onwards,” McClure revealed on Sportsday.

“He was (in the frame) and he’s a close friend of Graham Wright who was leading the process to replace Nathan Buckley.”

Robert Harvey is currently caretaker coach of the club, with the Pies losing to St Kilda by nine points on Sunday in his second game in charge.
