Watson calls out "completely unacceptable" Jack Viney incident

2021-08-03T08:24+10:00

Melbourne midfielder Jack Viney will front the AFL Tribunal after a “serious misconduct” charge on the weekend.

Viney can be seen pinning Gold Coast defender Sam Collins to the ground with his left elbow for an uncomfortable few seconds.

Tim Watson isn’t sure how the Tribunal will see the incident, but has labelled it “unacceptable”.

“It’s completely unacceptable. A completely unacceptable non-football act that Jack committed on the football field,” the former Essendon captain told SEN Breakfast.

“It looked violent, it looked ugly, it looked potentially seriously dangerous as well.

“I think they’ve done the right thing by sending it to the Tribunal.

“We don’t know what sort of penalty they might come back with. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got at least two weeks for that.

“There are things you can reasonably expect to happen to you on the football field and what took place there is not one of those.”

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon is a big fan of Viney, but agrees with Watson’s assessment.

“I hated the look. I love the man, I hated the look,” Lyon said.

“I didn’t like it. I know Jack’s a smart kid.

“I think he’ll get multiple weeks. At least two. I think they’ll make a point of him and say this is not the look we want in footy.”

Viney will front the Tribunal from Perth, where the Demons are currently preparing to play West Coast on Monday night.
