Gold Coast coach makes strong pitch for Queensland-based hub

2020-04-27T04:45+10:00

Gold Coast Suns coach Stuart Dew has thrown his support behind a Queensland-based player hub.

The AFL is set to announce their plans to restart the season in a fortnight and that is set to include several quarantine hubs to train and play games at.

Gold Coast is thought to be one of the frontrunners to house multiple teams due to its expansive location and number of elite training venues near Metricon Stadium.

Dew said it make sense for the AFL to include Gold Coast as one of its hubs due to its climate, facilities and opportunity to further the game in Queensland.

“I think we’re genuinely putting our hand up,” Dew said on Dwayne’s World.

“We think with the climate, the facilities, not only ovals but also accommodation options I think it is an attractive place up here and it’d be a good opportunity to further the brand of AFL in this region whilst other sports are in a little bit of hurt.

“We’ll put our hand up no doubt about that, but in the end the main thing is we can all get underway but we’d be very happy to host things here.”

“I guess our case we’re mounting both from a Metricon Stadium obviously the Gabba, but we’re a little bit biased here at Metricon, there’s training grounds for teams if they’re up here.

“I think it’d be a fantastic thing in the middle of winter if it is we’re playing in August, winter bypasses South-East Queensland so it’s a pretty good spot to play some AFL and showcase that across the telecast.”
