Dangerfield unsure if he is "comfortable" with AFL quarantine hub idea

2020-04-07T09:15+10:00

AFL Players Association President Patrick Dangerfield has weighed in on the idea of resuming the season in quarantine hubs.

The idea would see players and teams moved to isolated locations – potentially Tasmania or the Northern Territory – in order to play chunks of games in isolated environments.

Reports have suggested the AFL is genuinely considering this option, with AFL Football Operations Manager Steve Hocking telling The Age that it is being weighed up.

Dangerfield said the idea does make him uneasy.

“(Craig Hutchison) called the idea ‘fanciful’ so I think it’s maybe that,” he told SEN’s Whateley.

“At different stages these things are drip-fed to the media in order to generate conversation around the game, we need something to talk about, how realistic that is, I think speculative at best.

“We’ve said we’ll do what we can as players and I think you’d find there’s players who would be more than willing to do that and you will have some who are vehemently opposed.

“I know these are desperate times, but we have also got to be measured in our response to this.

“We’ve got to do the right thing by the community and set the right example and I think Round 1 was a good example of the angst playing created and I just think to do something like that while everyone is still in lockdown, there would have to be a huge amount of thought go into it.

“I’m not sure how comfortable I would be with it.”
