Cornes' top 5 marketable players in the AFL

2020-02-07T22:00+11:00

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes is set for a massive pay day.

Negotiations have begun on his playing contract that could see him sign a $200 million deal that pays him up to $40 million per year.

Mahomes is now the face of the NFL, and could be for the next 10 years. The Super Bowl MVP sold more merchandise than any other NFL player from March 1 to November 30, according to the NFLPA's official list.

Mahomes overtook Tom Brady who has been the league's retail leader for the past two seasons.

Not only is Mahomes going to make a truck load on the field, he is set to clean up off it with NFL insiders suggesting he will make as much as $7 million a year in additional endorsement income.

Mahomes currently represents brands Oakley, Adidas, Head & Shoulders, Heinz Ketchup and State Farm.

He also has his own cereal.

Hy-Vee, is a chain of 265 supermarkets which launched its exclusive Mahomes Magic Crunch cereal in August, prior to the NFL season.

Hy-Vee had expected to sell 50,000 boxes of cereal; however they did way better than that. This week the chain revealed it has sold 300,000 boxes of Mahomes Magic Crunch. And supplies are limited or running out. It is further evidence that Mahomes is one of the mot marketable athletes in the world.

It raised the topic of the most marketable players in the AFL. Which AFL player would help a cereal brand sell out if they plastered their face on the box?

Here is the list of the top five most markable players in the AFL ahead of the 2020 season.

5. Patrick Cripps

Now the standalone captain of one of the biggest clubs in Melbourne. Cripps is one of the most admired players in the game right now. His good looks, chiselled body and squeaky-clean image means he is the perfect fit to endorse your cereal.

4. Brodie Grundy

I love his quirky approach and his creative use of social media… He isn’t your typical footballer. Grundy has a unique look, exquisite football talents and plays for the biggest club in Australia. It is an enviable package.

3. Lance Franklin

Buddy has probably held the tittle as the AFL’s most marketable player for the last 10 years and has only recently been superseded. Everything about his on and off-field life spells sellable.

2. Nat Fyfe

The reigning Brownlow medallist is the hottest thing to come out of Perth since Ben Cousins burst onto the scene in the late 90s/early 2000s. Fyfe has long standing agreements with mega brands Lexus and Adidas as well as a host of other endorsements. The only thing missing from Fyfe taking the next leap is some on-field success but put his face on a box of cereal in Perth and I dare say it will sell out.

1. Dustin Martin

Martin perhaps earns the most off-field dollars than any other player due to significant endorsement deals with Bonds, Kennedy Jewellery, Voost vitamins and other clothing brands that he spruiks to his near 300 thousand Instagram followers. It’s not hard to see why the two-time Norm Smith medallist is so sort after.
