Two-time best and fairest Swan won't sign new deal until end of the season

2022-08-19T15:35+10:00

Sydney defender Jake Lloyd won’t put pen to paper on a new year until the end of the season.

Lloyd, 28, who is in his 10th season at the Swans, is currently uncontracted past 2022.

He’s won two best and fairests at Sydney, the most recent in 2020, while Lloyd has also finished second twice in the coveted award.

Despite all his success at the club, Lloyd hinted he was now considering his future.

When asked had he ever considered leaving, Lloyd said: “Nah, not up until now, no.

“I’m loving my time I Sydney, when we first move up here Sydney do it a little bit differently to other teams, you move in with two or three players when you move up and that connection and relationship you build with the players from the get go, it’s the place you want to be.

“It’s a great family environment, the city itself is beautiful, the weather, it’s pretty hard to go back to Victoria in the freezing cold in winter, it’s something we don’t get up here.

“I’m loving my time up here, I’ve been up here 10 years now so it feels like home.”

Lloyd is a Victorian who was drafted out of the North Ballarat Rebels. He signed a four-year extension at Sydney the end of 2018 after receiving strong reported interest from Gold Coast.

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey has reported the Swans and Lloyd are in negotiations for a new deal, but the dashing defender says he’ll wait to the end of the year to sign, given Sydney’s impending finals campaign.

“Yeah I am out of contract at the end of the year, but obviously I’ve got a lot more to worry about than the contract,” Lloyd stated.

“For me at the moment, it’s focusing on footy and then my family and myself will work that contract stuff out at the end of the year.”

One potential complicating factor in Lloyd’s deal is teammate Lance Franklin, who is also unsigned beyond 2022.

Franklin’s contract has been at the centre of plenty of speculation throughout 2022 and he recently put talks on a new deal off until the end of the year.

Lloyd joked that “might have to” take the spare change after what Franklin is offered, but added he’s focusing on the weekend’s game against St Kilda and the upcoming finals series.

Lloyd’s role has changed slightly in 2022 given the rise of Nick Blakey, however the 196-gamer has averaged 24.1 disposals, 6.0 marks and 5.5 inside 50s per game this season.
