The list management call that astounded Cornes

2021-04-06T12:54+10:00

Kane Cornes is astounded by Gold Coast’s decision to delist midfielder Jarryd Lyons.

Lyons spent weeks in the NEAFL during 2018 before he was moved on by the Suns at season’s end despite averaging the third most clearances per game that particularly year.

The 28-year-old was traded to Gold Coast from Adelaide at the end of 2016 after playing 55 matches across five seasons at West Lakes.

Brisbane snapped up Lyons as a delisted free agent on a three-year deal and has since become a key cog in the club’s midfield engine room.

Cornes cannot understand why Gold Coast – who finished 17th with four wins in 2018 – decided to let Lyons go.

“He is a star,” Cornes told SEN’s The Captain’s Run, in response to a listener’s text.

“I said last year if Jarryd Lyons was still at Adelaide, he’d be in their top three best players – and I stand by that.

“They (Crows) gave him away for a burnt pie and worse still Gold Coast gave him away for a cold burnt pie, and now he’s dominating Thursday night football for Brisbane.

“Goalkicker, tough, good ball user, and wins plenty of it. That was the case again last night (Thursday).

“The fact that Gold Coast gave him away for free is absolutely astounding.”

Lyons is averaging 25 disposals, six tackles and five clearances per game so far in 2021.

He was one of Brisbane’s best in last week's thrilling after-the-siren win over Collingwood.
