Bulldogs veteran forecasts "active" off-season

2020-10-08T11:01+11:00

Western Bulldogs veteran Easton Wood has forecast an active off-season for his side, who were bundled out of the finals by St Kilda last weekend.

Wood, who handed over the captaincy to Marcus Bontempelli this year, played 13 games this season after missing matches with a hamstring injury.

After a season where the Dogs qualified for finals but were defeated in an elimination final for a second consecutive year, Wood said he expected the club would be “active” during the trade period as they look to better their seventh-placed finish in 2021.

“I think there will be changes but I don’t know what they’ll look like,” he said on SEN’s Whateley.

“Every year our list manager Sam Power and (Luke Beveridge) have always been exploring and making addition to the team.

“We had Josh (Bruce) and Alex (Keath) come in at the end of last year and having an impact.

“In terms of what they’re looking to add (players), I’m not sure but I’m sure they’ll be looking to be active.”

The Bulldogs kicked four goals to one in the final term against the Saints last Saturday but were unable to complete the comeback victory, going down by three points.

Wood said he was pleased that his side’s efforts during the COVID-affected season saw them play finals but was disappointed not to make more of their finals berth.

“It’s an opportunity missed,” he said.

“It was such a hard year, it was great to not have it all for nothing and have all the hard work go into an opportunity (to win a premiership) and it was great to be in that position.

“But to ultimately fall three points short and leave too much work for us to get it done late in the game was a real shame because the way we finished the year and playing, I felt we were well-placed to make a finals run.

“It’s a shame and an opportunity missed.”
