Sydney firming as favourite to host AFL Grand Final

2020-07-09T07:45+10:00

Leading AFL journalist Caroline Wilson believes Sydney is in the box seat to host the AFL Grand Final.

Wilson said on Channel 9's Footy Classified that it was difficult to see Melbourne hosting the event, and that Sydney's 83,000 capacity ANZ Stadium could trump the smaller Optus Stadium in Perth.

“I think there’s every chance now the Grand Final will leave Victoria," she said.

“Sydney is framing as the favourite at the moment. Obviously this would be fantastic for the AFL’s push into the northern markets.

“Sydney are the flavour of the month at the moment with the AFL because they’ve done the right thing by the AFL, allowing players into the state.”

The last time the AFL Grand Final was held at a venue other than the MCG was in 1991 at Waverley Park.

AFL football has not been played at ANZ Stadium since the 2016 Qualifying Final between the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants.
