"It makes real sense": Collingwood linked to Melbourne star

2021-04-04T15:40+10:00

Melbourne star Christian Petracca is a trade target for Collingwood, according to Magpies great Tony Shaw.

Petracca, 25, is contracted to the Demons until the end of 2022 after inking a two-year extension in February last year, taking him through to free agency.

The former No.2 draft pick took his game to another level last season winning his first best and fairest, earning a maiden All-Australian blazer and finishing third in the Brownlow Medal.

Collingwood freed up salary cap space by offloading Adam Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tom Phillips and Atu Bosenavulagi during last year's tumultuous trade period.

Could they now target a big name like Petracca either this year or in 2022?

“I think Christian Petracca is Collingwood’s target,” Shaw told 3AW on Sunday.

“He is contracted next year but that doesn’t mean a hell of a lot.

“That’s what I’ve heard, that Christian Petracca will be the target for Collingwood.

“He won’t be getting paid $1.5 (million). There is no way known he’d be getting paid $1.5.

“I think it makes real sense – the bloke is an out-and-out superstar and a Collingwood supporter as a kid.

“I think he suits exactly what they need. They need a bull. (Scott) Pendlebury’s in the 30s, (Steele) Sidebottom’s in the 30s.”

Petracca has played 104 games for the Demons since debuting in 2016.
