Giants move for another senior Hawk and the pick they want to use in a potential trade

2021-10-13T15:30+11:00

GWS has made a play for contracted Hawthorn forward Luke Breust, reports AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.

The Giants are prepared to use pick 13 in a potential trade for the three-time premiership Hawk, who is contracted for another two years.

Twomey understands that Breust, 30, wants to stay at Hawthorn.

GWS has also shown interest in fellow Hawk Chad Wingard, but like Breust, he is also keen on remaining at Waverley Park for 2022.

“He’s keen to stay, but that hasn’t meant that GWS hasn’t asked the question over the last 24 hours,” Twomey told AFL Trade Radio.

“They have been searching for small forward depth. We know that they made a bit of dash at Chad Wingard, every club knows the Hawks have been open for business at the right price.

“This deal has been talked about over the past 24 hours. The sticking point is that like Wingard, Breust wants to stay at the Hawks.

“He’s 31 next month, he’s contracted for two more years, he’s a two-time All-Australian, but the Giants identified him and wanted to use their pick 13 in a potential deal, and there might have been other picks involved as well, that would have satisfied the needs of Hawthorn.

“We know how aggressive they’ve been in trying to find an extra draft pick inside the first round.

“At this point, Luke Breust wants to stay at Hawthorn. They aren’t pushing him out.”

Breust kicked 33 goals in 2021, topping Hawthorn’s goalkicking for the third time in four years.

The Giants could possibly lose young small forward Ian ‘Bobby’ Hill to Essendon after he requested a trade to Victoria on compassionate grounds.
