Johns considers Sharks “outsiders” in three-horse race for Bellamy

2021-02-15T09:55+11:00

League great Matty Johns believes the Cronulla Sharks are the least likely landing spot for Craig Bellamy from 2022 onward, despite rampant media speculation.

Bellamy has one year left on his current contract with the Melbourne Storm, and the Sharks recently confirmed they were in ‘ongoing’ talks with the 61-year-old for a Coaching Director role from next season.

Johns’ son Cooper is currently coached by Bellamy at the Storm, and the Fox League personality believes he is most likely to stay put in Melbourne, while touting the Brisbane Broncos as another potential destination.

“If you had to frame a market, I would consider them (Cronulla) outsiders,” Johns said on 1170 SEN Breakfast with Vossy.

“I would think Craig is most likely to stay at Melbourne and I think there’s a chance he may want to return to the Broncos because of his ties to Queensland.

“There’s always talk whenever he is out of contract that he may want to go back there.”

While Johns believes Cronulla is Bellamy’s least likely destination, he thinks the Sharks should still consider themselves a chance due to the legendary coach’s thirst for a challenge.

“It’s good to see the Sharks having a crack, who knows?” Johns added.

“One thing about Craig is, he likes a challenge, and he might look at the Sharks and what they’re trying to build, and it may appeal to him.

“It is good to see a little bit of ambition here.”
