Why the AFL has implemented strict new man on the mark rule

2021-02-08T10:15+11:00

AFL operations boss Steve Hocking is hoping the new man on the mark rule produces more free-flowing football during the upcoming season.

Three new rule changes are being introduced for the 2021 AFL season, the most notable of which has players unable to deviate once the umpire has set a mark for an opposing player.

Any breach of the strict new rule will see an immediate 50 metre penalty paid.

Speaking about the new interpretation, Hocking said he wanted to see a more attractive game across the board, which saw more “random acts” occur on the field.

“We absolutely just want to see greater flow, that’s what we want to see,” he told Channel 7.

“We want to see players do random acts, see more instinctive acts and take the game on.

“Hopefully what the fans get to see is a better balance between attack and defence, that’s what we’re trying to achieve.”

Umpires have visited multiple clubs over the off-season in an attempt to explain the new rule and ensure both coaches, players and officials are on the same page before the season begins on March 18.

New AFL Head of Umpiring Dan Richardson said the consulting process across the board had been extensive in the lead up to Round 1.

“As we enter into phases like this, there’s sometimes a bit of tension around that, early days,” he said.

“Hopefully working with the coaching staff at clubs, that’s hopefully a strength I bring (in this new role).”
