Cats captain raises concerns about rule change

2021-03-12T11:15+11:00

Geelong captain Joel Selwood has raised concerns about the return to longer quarters in 2021.

AFL matches will revert to 20-minute quarters after the league experimented with 16-minute quarters in last year’s condensed season.

Cats veteran Selwood expects teams to manage and rotate players during the upcoming 22-round season to prevent the risk of injury.

“I’m a bit worried this year about what it looks like,” Selwood told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“The players are a bit worried about what it looks like, and the supporters too.

“Because whether they like it or not, we may have to manage players at certain times and that might mean that young kids are going to a game and not seeing their favourite players.

“22 games and taking it up an extra four minutes a quarter, it’s going to be a stretch, that’s all I can say.

“It’s one that you do worry a little bit about.”

Selwood, 32, will captain Geelong for a 10th season and is one of only six players to have captained an AFL club on 200 occasions.

The Cats travel to Adelaide to face the Crows in Round 1 next Saturday afternoon.
