“Did what I felt was best for the team”: Warner admits selection regret

2021-03-03T14:18+11:00

David Warner admits he rushed back from a groin injury too soon during Australia’s Test series loss to India.

Warner missed the opening two Tests but was passed fit to play in the third and fourth Tests after hurting his groin during an ODI at the SCG in November.

The veteran opener scored 5, 13, 1 and 48 in his four Test innings and looked short of fitness, as Australia fell to a 2-1 series defeat.

In hindsight, Warner wouldn’t have played the final two Tests of the summer.

“I made the call to play those Test matches. I felt I needed to be out there,” Warner told reporters.

"It put me back a little bit. Looking back in hindsight, I probably wouldn't have done that.

"If I'm thinking about myself and the injury, I probably would have said no.

“I did what I felt was best for the team.

"I've had this time to heal and obviously with South Africa being called off, it gave me a bit more time to get that strength work done."

Warner, 34, will return for New South Wales in Thursday’s Marsh Cup match against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, his first appearance since the Gabba Test.
