Newly appointed Essendon CEO Andrew Thorburn has resigned from his post just one day after accepting the role.
Thorburn’s decision comes after he was embroiled in controversy due to his position as Chair of the City of the Hill church.
The church caused headlines after its stance on abortion and same-sex relationships came to light through a Herald Sun report.
While Thorburn asked to be “viewed by his actions and record” on SEN Breakfast in the wake of the controversy, the Bombers said via a statement that the church’s views were in “direct contradiction” to the club’s values.
Although Thorburn told Essendon that those views weren’t expressed by him personally, the board made it clear that he could not continue the dual role of both the church’s chair and club CEO.
