No AFLW premiership to be awarded in 2020

2020-03-22T17:40+11:00

The 2020 AFLW season has been cancelled and no premiership will be awarded.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan confirmed the news during a press-conference on Sunday where he also announced the postponement of the AFL season until May 31.

It comes as the coronavirus crisis continues to deepen across Australia.

"Today’s AFLW semi-final between Carlton and Brisbane Lions will be the last NAB AFL Women’s match to be played with the 2020 season ending today," McLachlan said.

"Given the twin conference structure and that the finals series was not completed, the AFL Commission has determined no premiership will be awarded for this season, following a recommendation from the AFL Executive."

Andy Maher feels the AFLW season could have been put on hold like the men's season.

"One final thought: given the men’s comp is on hold, why not the women’s comp too? Only three games left," Maher said on Twitter.

"They observe the same protocols moving forward as the men. Give them a fortnight’s notice before resumption. Play the season out. Why not?"

Carlton, North Melbourne, Melbourne and Fremantle were the four clubs vying for a spot in the Grand Final.
